Dr. Dach on Radio Feb 26, 2009

Dr. Dach discusses the safety of bioidentical hormones, and dangers of synthetic hormones, the Oprah Winfrey show, Suzanne Somers  etc..

Carmen Harra reveals that she has a thyroid condition and talks about thyroid problems in general.  Carmen says she visited Dr. Dach at his clinic and now feels much better.

Carment Harra Book on Health First Caller- Bioidentical Hormone Program Not Working

The first telephone caller asks about her bioidentical hormones program that is not working for her.  Caller says she is still tired and can't sleep.  Dr. Dach discusses thyroid as missing piece of the puzzle.

Dr. Dach uses a trial of low dose thyroid medication for diagnosis.  sophisticated thyroid lab panel, muscle reflex time with the thyroflex. Dr Dach uses a lengthy thyroid questionnaire with 70- questions.  Natural thyroid provides a remarkable improvement for people with a low thyroid condition.

Low body temperature is also a useful sign of low thyroid. Dr Dach mentions the Book, Stop the Thyroid Madness by Janie Bowthorpe recommended to caller.

Dr Dach says that the low thyroid condition mismanaged by conventional medicine which relies too heavily on unreliable lab studies.  Mainstream medicine uses synthroid rather than natural thyroid.  Connection between low thyroid condition and the adrenal cortisol production and the low cortisol condition.  Adrenal fatigue patient cannot tolerate thyroid medication.

Carmen Harra mentions Oprah Winfrey's thyroid condition.

Dr. Dach plugs his book, Natural Medicine 101 and his web site.

Carmen Harra praises Dr. Dach's free newsletter and asks everybody to sign up for the newsletter.

CarmentSecond Caller - Knee Problem

The second caller, a college student, asks about arthroscopic knee surgery for knee pain.  Dr. Dach mentions glucosamine chondroitin for osteoarthritis and chronic knee pain.  However,  this supplement is of limited usefulness for a meniscal tear.   MRI scan also useful to image a knee problem.

Dr. Dach's Art

Carmen mentions that Dr. Dach is also an artist with his artwork displayed on his web site.  Dr Dach says that his creativity comes out in his art, his writings, his new book, and also in his medical practice.

Dr Dach's new book , Natural Medicine 101:

There is a Medical information war going between natural medicine and the drug industry.  The book is an attempt to reveal
deceptive drug advertising examples: Jarvik heart Lipitor ads, Sally Fields Boniva ads.  The book is an attempt to pierce the veil of all of the false and deceptive drug advertising.

Dr. Dach medical practice: We are looking for Vitamin Deficiencies in the population. Vitamin B12 deficiency which can cause neurological problems and nerve damage, MS Parkinson's like syndromes. Chronic fatigue, malaise, bizarre mental changes, mood disorders.  Also we look for Vitamin D deficiency.

Third caller has numbness an weakness in shoulder and arm made worse by lifting heavy things. Dr. Dach suggests a good clinical examination by orthopedic surgeon and imaging with MRI scan. Possible cervical nerve root impingement syndrome.

Breast Cancer Prevention - Iodine Supplementation

Fourth Caller: waiting for green card, and career question. Caller says she has history of breast cancer, Low Grade Carcinoma in situ.

A chapter in Dr Dach's new book, Natural Medicine 101,  is devoted to breast cancer prevention, Iodine as most important mineral to prevent breast cancer. Iodized salt since 1924.  Iodine supplements for breast cancer prevention.

DCIS Ductal Carcinoma in Situ

This type of breast cancer called DCIS has  98% - 5 year survival even without any treatment.  Dr. Dach advised the caller to follow the recommendations of the doctor.

Dr Dach mentions the supplements Indole 3 carbinol, and DIM di-indole-methane, broccoli extracts also useful for breast cancer prevention and recurrence.

Dr Dach mentions Joesph McWherter's book on breast cancer prevention entitled,"Balance Your Hormones Safely while preventing breast cancer."

Fifth Caller- Iodine Supplementation

Fifth Caller asks question about Iodoral, an iodine supplement. This can be purchased without a prescription at VRP.com, from Optimox, a Guy Abraham company.  Each tablet is 12 mg, which is the daily dietary intake of Iodine in Japan.

What are the adverse side effects of Iodine.  Iodine is one of safest minerals we have.  COPD patients take SSKI in huge amounts with no problems.  Government will give 50 mg of Iodine to people in area around nuclear power plant accidents.

People who are Iodine deficient who start Iodine supplementation can have metallic taste, frontal headache, GI upset, all from bromine excretion.  Symptoms usually are transient and resolve in 24 hrs.

Preventing Heart Disease-Track Your Plaque

Dr Dach talks about and recommends the William Davis MD program called Track Your Plaque for reversal and prevention of heart disease.  This program has three parts: 1) Coronary calcium score 2) sophisticated lipoprotein panel called the VAP, 3) Targeted nutritional supplement program. If there is small particle LDL - then eliminate wheat products.  If there is elevated Lipoprotein(a) -then use Slo-Niacin available OTC at corner drug store.

As an Interventional Radiologist, Dr. Dach did arteriograms and studied clogged arteries for 30 years, so he understands the Dr Davis program.  There is a chapter in Natural Medicine 101 which discusses the Track Your Plaque Program.  Thyroid levels and Vitamin D level are important for heart disease prevention.  Everyone sign up for Track Your Plaque Newsletter.

Evidence for Bioidentical Hormones

Dr Dach mentions the Kent Holtorf MD and Erika Schwartz MD articles as good summary of the evidence for safety and effectiveness of bioidentical hormones.

Carmen invites Dr. Dach back for second radio show.  Carmen says Dr. Dach's appearance on the first show was a success.  Dr Dach mentions his new book, Natural Medicine 101, which can be purchased on Amazon.com, and also available as a free e-book on his blog.

Oprah, Suzanne Somers and BioIdentical Hormones

Carmen mentions Oprah Winfrey, Suzanne Somers and bioidentical hormones.  Dr Dach says Oprah and Suzanne Somers have been advocates of bioidentical hormones, and have done a tremendous service to the community, and made Dr. Dach's medical office much busier.

Carmen Talks About Herself

Carmen mentions her own thyroid condition, and thanks Dr. Dach for helping her medical condition.

Dr Dach says there is an epidemic of thyroid problems in our population that is ignored by mainstream medicine which has an antiquated approach either misdiagnosing the low thyroid condition or else using minuscule doses of synthroid which are ineffective.  Symptoms of low thyroid include muscle weakness and pain, fatigue, feeling cold, and depression.  Dr. Dach says he treats with natural thyroid medication in doses large enough to be effective with dramatic benefit in many cases.

There is a new book mentioned by Dr. Dach entitled," Stop the Thyroid Madness", by Janie Bowthorpe which discusses how mainstream medicine misdiagnoses and mistreats the low thyroid condition.

The Low Thyroid Condition and the Unreliable TSH Test

Carmen talks about her thyroid condition, and blood tests for the thyroid.  Dr. Dach discusses the unreliability of the TSH test which is used as a gold standard by mainstream doctors.

Carmen says has had many "normal thyroid blood tests', yet she has a low thyroid condition.

Dr Dach mentions the typical appearance of the low thyroid patient with puffy face, cold hands and feet, loss of outer third of eyebrows, hair loss etc.  Lab test may be completely normal.  TSH test can be unreliable.

Symptoms of the low thyroid condition: low body temperature, feeling cold, difficulty losing weight, puffy appearance of face, especially puffy around eye lids, loss of eyebrows, hair limp and brittle, brittle weak nails, coarse thickened skin, sluggish slow nervous system, constipation, mental problems, mood disorder, depression, psychosis, cognitive dysfunction, muscle problems, muscle weakness, muscle pain, fibromyalgia etc.

Adrenal Fatigue

Dr Dach also mentions low adrenal function which is an important part of the picture which is ignored by mainstream medicine.

Hillary Clinton and Carment Harra Health Insurance and Degeneration of Medical Practice

Mainstream Doctors can only spend 3-4 minutes with each patient because health insurance payments are limited to small amounts.  This allows only most primitive cookbook medical practices such as checking the TSH test and adjusting synthroid dosage, that's all you get.

If you need a high tech medical procedure, a kidney transplant, etc. we have the best medical system, but for chronic medical problems, our medical system is falls short and is a disappointment.

First Caller - Vivian from San Jose, California

Caller says she is losing her hair and feels cold all the time.  Her specialist says she should take Rogaine for hair loss.  She was diagnosed with a major depressive disorder since age 18 on SSRI anti-depressants, currently not working and is laid off.

Dr Dach says he hears this type of story every day.  Many of these people feel cold, with hair loss, depression, lack of energy and are treated with SSRI's antidepressants by the mainstream medical system.  In reality, these are the misdiagnosed low thyroid patients. What they really need is thyroid medication.  Many patients fell good and can taper off the SSRI meds once started on thyroid medication.  Vivian is trying to find a holistic doctor.  Dr. Dach tells her how to find a doctor in her area.  Use the Doctor's Directory for A4M and ACAM.  Dr. Dach recommends Ron Rothenberg MD for Vivian.

Dr. Dach discusses his thyroid test panel in detail.  Dr Dach does the following test panel on his thyroid patients: a TSH, free T3, Free T4, anti-thyroid antibodies, Reverse T3.  Also anti-adrenal antibodies.  We also do a 4 sample salivary cortisol test.

Multiple Psycho-Active Drugs for the Population

Dr Dach says that the mainstream medical system hands out SSRI drugs like candy.  If the first drug doesn't work, they then pile on 2,3, or 4 more drugs.  Shortly, these drugs stop working, and patients become addicted, and go into drug withdrawal. Vivian reveals she has been on many psychoactive drugs.  Seroquel, Effexor, Lithium, Zoloft, and found that she was sleeping a lot.  Vivian says she was junkie, and was addicted to these SSRI drugs for years, and finally with great effort she got off them.  Vivian was advised to find a holistic doctor in her area.

Anna Nicole Smith -The Great Thyroid Scandal

Carmen Harra brings up the unfortunate case of Anna Nicole Smith who died of a drug overdose.  Her autopsy showed a low thyroid condition.  She needed thyroid meds rather than anti-depressants and psycho-active drugs.  A thyroid problem could explained why she was fat.  The Anna Nicole Smith case is an example of the "thyroid scandal" in mainstream medicine.  Hopefully things are starting to change.

Functional Medicine Meeting with Jay Lombard and Mark Hyman

Dr. Dach attended this medical meeting which was held at the Diplomat Hotel in Hollywood June 2009. Depression is the main topic of the meeting.  Limitations of SSRI medications were discussed.  It was announced that Abram Hoffer passed away, the father of Natural Medicine Movement.  There was a sense of passing the baton to a new generation of doctors.  Dr Dach was fortunate to meet and talk to Abram Hoffer MD at his lifetime achievement gala dinner in Toronto a few years ago.  Dr. Dach sat at a table with Hoffer's family and heard old stories about Linus Pauling coming for Lunch.  Everyone received copies of his book, "Adventures in Psychiatry".  Hoffer published an article in Lancet on treatment of schizophrenia with high dose niacin.  Carmen says Dr. Dach is a pioneer in natural medicine.

Last Caller: Weight Loss

Caller says she was diagnosed with low thyroid.  Caller says she takes 30 mcg cytomel and 100 mch synthroid, with a TSH of 0.4, and yet she still unable to lose weight and want Dr, Dach to tell her why.  Dr. Dach says obesity and type 2 diabetes is a growing problem in the population.  What causes it?  Dr. Dach says for many it is a thyroid problems, also a culprit is the standard American Diet with high volume of processed carbs and sugars, etc.

Dr. Dach says TSH can be unreliable and is an indirect indicator of thyroid function.  Caller says she did not have free T3 test which is the correct test.  Dr Dach suggests to caller that she have the correct tests, and then optimize thyroid function with the correct Doctor in her area.

Dr Dach says there are three things to think about for weight loss: 1) Optimize metabolic rate and thyroid function, 2) proper low carb diet, and 3) proper exercise.  Fourth factor is Estrogen Dominance as described by CW Randolph's book, Belly Fat to Belly Flat.

Estrogen Dominance

Estrogen Dominance was first described by John R Lee in his books on Progesterone. This is defined as a relatively high level of estrogen compared to progesterone, and this can prevent weight loss.

Safety of Bioidentical Hormones

The Caller says her doctor suggests bioidentical hormones for her, and she asks if bioidentical hormones are safe. Dr. Dach says yes, bio-identical hormones are safe and effective and do not increase risk of breast cancer or heart disease.  Synthetic hormones, however are unsafe and dangerous.  These are Frankenstein monster version of hormones.  This information is not available in the mainstream media because there is an information war going on.  There is a propaganda war going on between the Drug Company corporations that control mainstream medicine, and on the other side, the weaker voice of natural medicine.

Bioidentical hormones are natural, and only one small part of the world of natural medicine.

What are bioidentical hormones made of?

Dr. Dach says that bioidentical hormones are made from plants so that final chemical structure is the same as what the human body makes.  Premarin from a pregnant horse is "natural" but is not human.  Carmen suggests that the caller take bio-identical hormones as the missing link.
